We at Gulf Scholars all hope your week has been good! As we move further into the term and settle into our classes, we have come to more deeply discuss our goals and understanding of the Gulf region through our weekly classes. As we continue to introduce our scholars, we continue to appreciate the diversity of interests the program spans.
This week, we introduce our second scholar: Anna Claire Carter
What is your name, hometown and major?
- Name: Anna Claire Carter. Hometown: Jonesboro, Arkansas. Major: Southern Studies. Minors: Community Engaged Leadership and Political Science.
What interests you most about the Gulf Scholars Program?
- I was drawn to the Gulf Scholars Program because of its interdisciplinary nature and the opportunity to learn from peers with different academic backgrounds. I'm excited to work together across disciplines to address challenges facing Gulf communities.
What are you considering for your Gulf Impact Project?
- Right now, I am considering centering my project on storytelling and oral history, focusing on capturing the voices and experiences of people directly impacted by challenges in the Gulf. I'm interested in studying place and how environmental changes affect our relationship to it.
What are you most excited to learn more about?
- I’m excited to learn more about the current challenges facing the Gulf region and the work being done to address them. I’m especially looking forward to hearing from experts and community leaders about how these issues are being approached across different fields.
What do you want to accomplish by the end of the program?
- I haven’t spent much time on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so I hope to develop a deeper understanding of the region. I also hope to build meaningful relationships with other scholars while gaining the knowledge and skills to give back to Mississippi.
