The University of Mississippi is located in the Gulf’s north Mississippi (MS) watershed, UM offers ample opportunity to ground student experience in a place-based approach to learning that both stresses civic engagement and nurtures individual responsibility for environmental health. Our institutional landscape centers the interdisciplinary research and teaching fundamental to a successful GSP. The UM GSP will connect to teaching, research and outreach initiatives already in place, including: the new Environmental Studies (ENVS) major, interdisciplinary centers already contributing to place-based learning in MS (Center for Biodiversity and Conservation Research, Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Center for Community Engagement, the Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement; and the Community First Research Center for Wellbeing and Creative Achievement. These initiatives and their infrastructures contribute to an institutional environment invested in developing and maintaining a robust GSP.
