Culturally Centered Care Research Lab
The Culturally Centered Care Research Lab (CCCR) is led by Dr. Vanessa Oliphant- Assistant Professor of Psychology and African American Studies at the University of Mississippi.
Research grounded in our cultural strengths, collective wisdom, and an ethic of care and love.
Our culture is rooted in ancestral healing methodologies, practices, wisdom, and love, drawing inspiration from the intellectual and liberatory traditions of Kobi Kambon, Na’im Akbar, and bell hooks.
Who we are
Our team is composed of clinical psychology doctoral students, undergraduate research assistants, and interdisciplinary faculty collaborators across universities, including Florida A&M University, The University of Mississippi, and Oklahoma State University. We are always open to new interdisciplinary collaborations and community partnerships that center Black healing, wellness, and liberation.
What we do
Our lab centers the healing and well-being of Black women, grounding our research in cultural relevance and justice. We prioritize culturally informed methods that honor the voices and perspectives of Black women, seeking to reclaim and reimagine healing practices that promote liberation and wellness. Our work is fundamentally informed by the traditions of African American Studies, Black Feminist Thought, and African/Black Psychology.
Our lab has recently expanded to also focus on Black men’s mental wellness, African Americans involved in sports, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and the intersections of nutrition, holistic health, and well-being across Black communities.
