The offshore branch of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute established by Congress in 1988 and reauthorized under the Marine Minerals Resources Research Act of 1996 as the Center for Marine Resources and Environmental Technology (CMRET). Its principal mission has been studying and monitoring the Gulf of America continental slope's shallow hydrocarbon system, particularly within the Gas Hydrate Stability Zone (HSZ).
